A Study Of Opioid Prescribing Patterns Following Primary And Revision Hip And Knee Arthroplasty

About this study

The purpose of this study is to quantify the proportion of prescribed oral morphine equivalents (OME) that remain unused at approximately 30 days following primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Primary or revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) performed at the Mayo Clinic Rochester campus by surgeons Cody Wyles, M.D., Tadd Mabry, M.D., or

  • Charles Hannon, M.D between May 2026 and July 2026

  • Ability to be contacted by telephone and complete a phone survey in English

 

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Arthroplasty performed for an oncologic indication

  • Patient unable to be reached by telephone within the target postoperative survey window

  • Patient unable or unwilling to complete the scripted telephone survey

  • More than 35 days or less than 25 days from date of surgery
