A Study Of Virtual Reality For Anxiety Reduction Before Chest Tube Removal In Postoperative Cardiac Surgery

About this study

The purpose of this study is to implement and assess the effect of a brief virtual reality mindfulness session on anxiety levels in adult patients undergoing chest tube removal after cardiac surgery, using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) as the primary measurement tool.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adult, first-time sternotomy patients or CVS patients who have undergone cardiac surgery for the first time

  • Alert and oriented to person, place, and time

  • English speaking

  • Consent to using VR

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Under the age of 18

  • History of chest tube remova

  • History of neurocognitive disorder such as delirium or dementia

  • History of serious stroke, seizure history, ventilator patients

  • Severe hearing loss

  • Loss of sight

  • An injury to the face that would prevent VR utilization
