About this study

The purpose of this study is to characterize B and T lymphocyte immune repertoire from blood and intestinal biopsies from patients with IBD.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adults ≥18 years of age.

  • Undergoing Ileocolonoscopy as part of their clinical care.

  • Medical History has either of the following:

    • Confirmed diagnosis of ulcerative colitis or

    • No history of ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Unable to provide consent.

  • They are currently on the following supplements or medications within the past two weeks:

    • Probiotics

    • Antibiotics

    • Proton pump inhibitors

    • H2-receptor antagonists

  • History of Clostridium difficile infection within two months.

  • Positive Enteric pathogen confirmed by qPCR or stool culture.

  • Small bowel transplant history of gastric/intestinal bypass surgery.

  • Current diagnosis of a motility disorder.

  • Advanced co-morbid condition (e.g., end stage liver disease, coagulopathy) who cannot stop high-risk medications (e.g., anti-platelet or anticoagulants) as defined by the principal investigator.

  • Known immunodeficiencies, malignancies and/or human immunodeficiency virus.
