Development of Biomarkers for Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Developing Novel Therapeutic Approaches in Chronic Rhinosinusitis

About this study

The goals of the current proposal are to perform a cross-sectional study to investigate how the presence of viruses and other microbes (latent or activated) in the sinonasal cavity correlate with CRS-associated pathogenic changes in sinonasal tissue and systemic immunological response in the serum (presence and magnitude of microbe-specific antibody responses.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

 Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adult patients (age more than 18 years) presenting to the rhinology clinic for CRS and non-CRS conditions in the department of rhinology, Mayo Clinic in Arizona will be enrolled for collecting nasal secretions and nasal brushings.
  •  A sub-cohort of above patients (approximately 50 patients), that will undergo nasal endoscopy, have a CT scan and are expected to have surgical resection of tissue as part of standard of care will be offered enrolment for collecting sinonasal waste tissue. 

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Use or oral antibiotics or topical nasal antibiotics over last 4 weeks
  • Use of systemic or oral corticosteroids in the last 4 weeks
  • History of intramuscular corticosteroid injections in 12 weeks prior to study enrollment
  • Patients on biologic therapy
  • Patients with known immunodeficiency, on immunosuppressant therapy, vasculitis, granulomatous disorders or cystic fibrosis
  • Patients with odontogenic and allergic fungal rhinosinusitis
  • Pregnant subjects
  • Minors
