Smoking Cessation via a Faith-Based, Community-Oriented Rural Intervention

About this study

The purpose of this study, in rural people who smoke, is to identify any technical issues with the intervention, provide feedback on whether the private group worked as intended, and collect information on the intervention’s perceived ease of use, relevance, and satisfaction.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age ≥ 18 years.
  • Resident of a rural area in the MCHS catchment area.
    • Note: Rural residency status will be determined based on zip code using Rural-Urban Commuting Area (RUCA) codes.  RUCA codes 4-10 are classified as rural areas and eligible for this study. 
  • Self-reports smoking at least one (1) tobacco cigarette per day over the past seven (7) days.
  • Willing to make or consider making an attempt to quit smoking.
  • Reliable access to the internet on a computer, tablet, or smartphone OR is willing to use a loaner iPad for the duration of the study.
  • Has or is willing to create a Facebook account.
  • Completion of the baseline survey prior to program start.
  • Willing to provide informed consent.
  • Willing to participate in the beta-test and complete study procedures.
  • Comfortable viewing study posts that contain Christian faith-based content including Bible verses.
  • Willing to respect the confidentiality and faith perspectives of other group members.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Age ≤ 17 years.
  • Resides in an urban area (RUCA codes 13) based on zip code.
  • Does not regularly smoke tobacco cigarettes or is not willing to make a quit attempt.
  • No or inconsistent access to the internet or Facebook and not willing to use a loaner iPad.
  • Unwilling to view Christian faithbased content, or unwilling to respect the opinions and privacy of other group members.
  • Unwilling to provide informed consent.
