Determinants of Incident Stroke Cognitive Outcomes and Vascular Effects on Recovery (DISCOVERY)

About this study

The purpose of this study is to to explain the mechanisms of brain resilience and susceptibility to post-stroke cognitive impairment and dementia (PSCID) in diverse U.S. populations based on the complex interplay among vascular risk factors, pre-existing disease burden, acute stroke lesion location, and genomic and epigenomic variations.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age ≥ 18 years old.
  • Admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of AIS, ICH, or aSAH.
  • Radiographic confirmatory evidence of:
    • AIS;
    • Non-traumatic ICH; or
    • Non-traumatic acute aSAH.
  • Able to be enrolled within 6 weeks of stroke onset.
  • Able to provide informed consent by self or via proxy.
  • Fluent in English or Spanish prior to stroke onset.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Documented history of pre-stroke dementia or fails dementia prescreen.
  • Concurrent enrollment into a study that is not approved under the DISCOVERY Co-Enrollment Policy.
