Course Description
This course will develop instructors for simulation-based education. Through the use of hands on techniques, participants will learn the principles of simulation-based education including training methods, course design and concepts, and debriefing strategies.
Date and Location
Instructor Development: Simulation-Based Education Design and Debriefing will begin at 8:00 a.m. Monday, March 16 and end on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. in the Mayo Clinic Multidisciplinary Simulation Center (MCMSC). The MCMSC is located on the main floor of the Stabile Building located at 150 Third Street SW, Rochester, MN. It is easily accessible by the skyway and pedestrian subway, which connects Mayo clinic to shops, restaurants, and hotels.
Intended Audience
The course is designed for individuals taking responsibility for curriculum design, implementation, and execution in an experiential learning-based setting. The course will be limited to 16 participants.
Course Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, the participant should be able to:
- Compare and contrast traditional education versus simulation as a teaching methodology
- Describe concepts of simulation-based education
- Describe differing types of simulation
- Describe elements for well-designed simulation-based education to achieve good outcomes
- Identify ways to use simulation for an existing curriculum or a new simulation course/experience
- Identify the elements of simulation course/scenario design
- Develop simulation scenarios
- Describe ways to prepare the learner prior to simulation activities
- Describe debriefing strategies
- Demonstrate effective debriefing strategies

Requirements
Once registered, participants will receive a confirmation letter and demographic questionnaire, which should be completed and returned to the MCMSC. Participants will also receive a list of required/suggested pre-read articles prior to the course. Due to the interactive nature of this course, and to allow for electronically generated course content, each participant is required to bring a laptop to the course. The laptop should be Microsoft Word compatible; wireless capability preferred. If this is not possible, please let the Simulation Center know upon registering and we will accommodate you.
Continuing Education Credits (CME/CNE) College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic designates this educational activity for a maximum of 16 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Mayo Continuing Nursing Education is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Participants can earn up to 16 accredited nursing contact hours. A certificate of attendance will be provided to other health care professionals for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.

The registration fee for the three-day course will be $2,100 per attendee, payable by check to Mayo Foundation. Tuition will be due by February 13, 2009. We are unable to process purchase orders or credit cards.

Enrollment and Cancellation Policy
Attendance is expected at all portions of the three-day course. Due to the limited number of participants for the course, a waiting list will start once the maximum number of participants is reached. If you must cancel your reservation, we will refund your tuition, less a $50 administrative fee, upon written notification.

Travel
Rochester, Minnesota, is serviced by a modern international airport with multiple flights daily from Chicago, Minneapolis, or Detroit via American or Northwest Airlines. Access to and from the airport is provided by taxi cab and shuttle service. The airport is located approximately 10 driving miles from the Mayo Clinic complex.

Parking is available in hotel, city and Mayo patient/visitor ramps. The cost for parking is not included in the registration fee. A map indicating the location of downtown parking facilities will be sent with the registrant confirmation e-mail.
