Glossary of Terms

Axial — Aligned with the axis of rotation of a CT scanner
Control — Usually are animals not subjected to any interventions
Coronal — A section oriented in the plane connecting left to right and head to foot
Distal — Away from the center of the body or the origin of an artery
Knockout — Short hand for selective removal of a particular gene
MIP — Maximum Intensity Projection of the 3D Micro-CT image grey scale, ie the brightest grey scale value along each line of sight through the 3D image
PhenoscopePhenotype is visualized (scope) by 3D Micro-CT imaging
Proximal — Close to the center of the body
Render — The 3D surface of an imaged object is displayed in 2D
Sagittal — A section oriented in the plane front to back and head to foot
Trans axial — At right angles to an axis usually the head to foot axis of the body and/or axis of rotation of a CT scan
Transverse — A section oriented left to right and front to back
Volume Image — 3D image data set
Voxel — A 3D volume picture element (pixel)
