In this study, tissue scaffolds are seeded with cells of interest so that the effects of environmental factors, such as temperature and stretch on cell structure and function can be studied.

These experiments are critical if one wishes to build a healthy lung from component parts. This knowledge will enable physicians and scientists to improve the function of donor organs before they are implanted into a recipient with failing lungs.
