Cell Salvage Therapies for Injuries

This is an optical sectin of an injured lung.

This is an optical section of an injured lung. The alveoli contain green fluorescein dextran. The nuclei of injured alveolus resident cells can be identified by their red fluorescence.

Researchers in Dr. Hubmayr's lab measure the integrity of alveolus resident cells in mechanically ventilated rodent lungs using intravital microscopy approaches. This process can, on the basis of propidium iodide exclusion, conclude if an agent of interest protects alveolus resident cells from breathing-associated cell wounding, or if it promotes plasma membrane wound repair.

Using this approach the lab has identified several cell protective candidate agents and has begun to test some of these in mechanically ventilated patients with injured lungs.
