Clinical Fellowships

The advanced hepatology fellowship training program at Mayo Clinic Rochester has been in existence for nearly 2 decades. During this time, we have trained over 30 hepatologists with the majority pursuing careers in academic medicine. Our hepatology fellows are involved in a variety of clinical and research activities which are tailored to their specific interests. The fellowship is arranged such that each fellow spends 6 months rotating on the inpatient and outpatient liver transplant service, 4 months on dedicated research time, and 2 months in outpatient non-transplant hepatology clinics. We currently have 18 staff hepatologists, each of whom is involved in basic science or clinical research in hepatology. Our research environment incorporates both patient care and research activities for those interested in clinical research. Many of our staff hepatologists have large subspecialty practices in areas such as viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cholestatic liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, hemochromatosis, and liver tumors.

Mayo has a strong commitment to academic hepatology. We have a number of basic research and clinical conferences. Specifically, each week there is a dedicated hepatology conference. In addition, we have a weekly liver transplant conference as well as Grand Rounds within the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology which often relates to liver disease. Finally, there is a Divisional research conference which likewise is often focused on liver diseases. Adequate computer space and technical support is available both within and outside of our Division.
