My subspecialty training is in advanced endourologic treatment of urolithiasis and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Current ongoing projects in the area of urolithiasis research include a collaborative effort among urology, radiology, pathology and nephrology evaluating the pathogenesis of stone disease. By evaluating different urine, endoscopic, radiologic, and pathologic findings our goal is to identify underlying physiologic events related to stone formation.
As a separate project, I am participating in a multi-institutional study evaluating the efficiency of different lithotripters at time of percutaneous nephrolithotomy. I also have a special interest in the treated of urolithiasis during pregnancy focusing on surgical removal of symptomatic stone disease and metabolic assessment of risk factors for stone formation during pregnancy.
In the area of benign prostatic hyperplasia, I am currently evaluating the role of holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) for the treatment of urinary retention associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia and a poorly contractile bladder.
I am also a coinvestigator of a study evaluating the role of metabolic abnormalities in conjunction with benign prostatic hyperplasia in the formation of bladder calculi.
