Summary

Erik P. Hess, M.D., is an emergency medicine physician and health services researcher with an interest in emergency cardiovascular care.

The long-term goal of Dr. Hess' research program is to improve the diagnosis, management efficiency and patient experience of care for acute cardiovascular conditions in the emergency setting.

Dr. Hess' work has been funded by the American Heart Association, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, and the Foundation for Informed Medical Decision Making.

Focus areas

  • Diagnosis of acute heart disease, particularly acute myocardial infarction and the evaluation of possible acute coronary syndromes
  • Clinical research methodology, particularly the development and validation of clinical prediction rules and the development and testing of patient-centered, shared decision-making approaches to care in the acute setting

Significance to patient care

Dr. Hess' research aims to improve patients' knowledge about their potential acute cardiovascular diagnosis; patient engagement in decision making; and clinicians' application of evidence-based medicine to improve the quality, efficiency and patient-centeredness of diagnostic and treatment decisions in the emergency setting.
