Summary
The research of George B. Bartley, M.D., has focused on the effects of systemic disease, such as thyroid dysfunction, on the tissues around the eye. Additionally, he is interested in the management of melanoma of the eye and cancers that involve the eyelids and orbit; disorders of the lacrimal (tear drainage) system; and plastic surgery around the eye.
Significance to patient care
Proper functioning of the eye depends on proper functioning of the tissues that surround the eye, such as the eyelids, the tear drainage system and the eye socket. Many of the problems that affect these structures, either from birth defects, trauma, systemic disease or cancer, can be improved or cured surgically.
