Electroconvulsive therapy

The electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) research group performs large multicenter trials of ECT efficacy and methods to prevent relapse.

The group is part of the Consortium for Research in ECT (CORE), a federally-funded multisite research initiative. Mayo Clinic CORE researchers have been supported by National Institutes of Mental Health grants for more than 10 years.

Projects

  • Shirlene Sampson, M.D., is investigating how to maintain remission of depression after a successful acute series of ECT.
  • Maria I. Lapid, M.D., is exploring factors that impact the transition from inpatient to outpatient in ECT treatment.
