A Study Of Vision-Based Assessment Of Work Of Breathing Using Synchronized ICU Video And Physiologic Waveform Data

About this study

The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a CV-based algorithm to classify high- vs. low-WOB using synchronized ICU video and waveform data.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria

  • Adults ≥ 18 years of age.

  • Admitted to an ICU bed equipped with a HelloCare™ camera.

  • Either:

    • Intubated and invasively ventilated (expected ≥ 24 h), or

    • Non-intubated (may be on HFNC, NIV, or room air)

  • Capacity to provide informed consent or availability of a legally authorized representative (LAR) .

  • Thoraco-abdominal region can be video-recorded without obstruction (no large dressings covering the chest/abdomen)

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • extensive dressings, or chest wall deformities that obstruct visual capture of respiratory motion.

  • Declined consent from the patient or LAR.

  • Comfort-measures-only status or an active “Do Not Re-intubate” order.

  • Presence of a tracheostomy (alters anterior-neck kinematics and airflow pathways).

  • Non English speaking, pregnant,<18 years of age.
