Virtual Reality in Hospitalized Patients with Cirrhosis

About this study

 

The purpose of this study is to establish feasibility and patient acceptability of virtual reality (VR) use in hospitalized patients with decompensated cirrhosis.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:
-18 years or older
-Decompensated cirrhosis of any etiology
-Hospitalized on an inpatient service at Mayo Clinic Rochester
-Stable medical condition as determined by the primary hospital team
-Intact cognitive function with the ability to understand and follow instructions
-Patients willing to provide informed consent to participate in the study
-English speaking, although this does not need to be their first language

Exclusion Criteria:
-Unable to provide informed consent to participate in the study
-Severe medical instability or patients requiring transfer to ICU
-Cognitive impairment that is deemed significant including poorly controlled HE that could potentially impair their ability to follow instructions or result in worsening confusin
-Certain medical conditions like vertigo/vestibular disorders/motion sickness, unstable/untreated psychiatric conditions (specifically clinical diagnosis of psychosis), severe neurological damage, or a clinical diagnosis of epileps
-Cardiac pacemaker or other metal devices
-Open wounds at the level of the face
-Major motor, audio, or visual dysfunctions
-Active alcohol or drug withdrawal
