A Two Part Trial of Bipolar Disorder Measures in Clinical Care

About this study

The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility of measurement-based care (MBC) with the preferred measure for bipolar disorder and assess fidelity to the protocol including measure administration, scoring, and reviewing results.  Additionally, to compare MBC with the preferred measure for bipolar disorder to enhanced usual care.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria: 

  • Clinician diagnosis of bipolar disorder, planned continued care in the same clinic, and either a new consultation or referral to the mental health clinicians in the enrolled primary care settings, or a recent change in medication treatment (inclusive of changes resulting from in-person or telehealth visits, phone discussions, or electronic medical record portal messages). 

Clinicians:

  • Fully-trained psychiatrists (e.g., completed residency) providing clinical care in IBH clinics.
  • Psychiatrists and psychiatric APRNs providing clinical care in IBH clinics.

Exclusion Criteria: 

Patients:

  • Individuals with inability to consent to participate in research, active psychosis determined by treating clinician, or who are not intending to return to care in that system.

Clinicians:

  • Trainees, non-psychiatrist clinicians (e.g., primary care clinicians, psychologists).
  • Non-psychiatrist or psychiatric APRN clinicians (e.g., primary care clinicians, psychologists, social workers).
