Support Person Effectiveness Study to Promote Smoker Utilization of the QUITPLAN Helpline

Location:

Rochester, Minn.

Trial status:

Open for Enrollment

Why is this study being done?

This study is being done to learn the helpfulness of a telephone-based program for support persons living in MN who are worried about a cigarette smoker living in MN.  This study will help support person learn new ways to be supportive as well as encourage a smoker to call the QUITPLAN Helpline.  The QUITPLAN Helpline is the tobacco Helpline for the state of Minnesota.  Research shows that Helpline?s are an effective way for smokers to quit or make a plan to quit.  The person you want to support does not need to be interested in or even thinking about quitting smoking in order for you to be in the study.   If the smoker does choose to call QUITPLAN, they are eligible for free services (counseling and/or nicotine replacement therapy) for seven months.  The seven months starts on the date of support person enrolling into our study.

Who is eligible to participate?

To be eligible, the support person must:  1) reside in Minnesota  2) be 18 years of age or older  3) provide written informed consent  4) be a never or former cigarette smoker (no cigarette smoking in the past 6 months)  5) be interested in supporting a current cigarette smoker (has smoked a total of >1 cigarettes during the past 7 days) who is 18 years of age or older, resides in Minnesota, and has not been enrolled in a quitline or any other cessation program in the last 3 months   6) be able and willing to participate in all aspects of the study  7) have access to a working telephone  8) have current and anticipated contact (any combination of face-to-face, telephone, text messaging, facebook, or electronic mail) with the smoker on at least 3 days a week for the 30 week study duration.    Individuals will be excluded if another support person from the same household has enrolled.

What is involved?

This study is done by mail and telephone.  You will complete a consent form and short questionnaire at the start of the study.  After we receive the forms, you will be put into one of three groups by chance (as in the flip of a coin).  Group one will be the self-help group and they will receive written materials only.  The written materials contain information for persons wanting to support a smoker.  Group two will be the one-call telephone-based group and they will receive the same written materials plus one 15-20 minute telephone session with a QUITPLAN Helpline Coach.  Group three will be the three-call telephone-based group and they will receive the same written materials plus three weekly, 15-20 minute telephone sessions with a QUITPLAN Helpline Coach.

At week 4 of the study, you will receive two short questionnaires to fill out and return.  This will take about 10 minutes.  At week 30 of the study you will receive the same two questionnaires to finish and return.  This should take about 10 minutes to finish.

How long is the study?

Your time in the study is thirty weeks.
