How does Mayo education compare with previous education you've received at other institutions?
Even though I didn't go to formal classes, I found that Mayo's way of teaching in the lab and via seminars is excellent. They are truly concerned with not only making the best practitioners this country has to offer, but also with the practitioner's well-being. It creates a wonderful and fulfilling environment in which to work.
What opportunities have you been introduced to since being at Mayo?
I have been able to work in my assigned lab, attend seminars, observe Grand Rounds and even shadow various physicians.
Why did you choose Mayo Clinic over other medical institutions?
Because it's Mayo. I've heard only good things about Mayo. I also wanted to see what Minnesota was like.
What is your program like? What sorts of projects or workshops have you done?
My program involves being paired with a mentor. We are assigned a project for the summer either in clinical or basic-science research. We attend weekly seminars, and then at the end of the session, we present a poster to the entire Mayo community.
How would you describe the atmosphere of Mayo Clinic?
It is driven, yet peaceful and very sincere.
What is your everyday life like in Rochester?
In the mornings, I go for a fun run on one of the many Rochester trails. Then I go back to my residence and get ready for the workday. I take a bus to the downtown Mayo campus and then the shuttle from Mayo Clinic to Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus. It might sound like a lot, but in total it takes me 10 minutes to get from my place to the hospital. Plus, public transportation is free for Mayo employees.
In the evenings, I relax and have "me" time, eat my dinner, read a book, and watch television with my roommate. Some nights when my roommate and I are not too tired, we venture into town for dinner and some other socializing event.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to be a physician who is actively involved in research.
If you could describe Mayo in one word, what would it be?
With what activities are you involved in Rochester?
Every week there is something going on in Rochester. From Rochesterfest to the St. John's Block Party, there is always something in which to get involved. I personally like trying out the different restaurants that are unique to Rochester.
How does Rochester differ from your hometown? College community?
I come from a big city, Baltimore, Md., and go to school near Chicago, so life here is very different. The pace is much slower. There is no rush-hour traffic and the highways are 70 mph - glorious. I find the pace a welcome change from the big cities because I really have time to do what is important to me and have truly grown as a result of this opportunity.
