Steve Kelley, J.D.

Senior Fellow, Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and Deputy Director, Center for Integrative Leadership, University of Minnesota

Steve Kelley, J.D., is a senior fellow at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and the deputy director of the Center for Integrative Leadership at the University of Minnesota. The center supports research, teaching and public engagement in cross-sector leadership. Before joining the Humphrey School in 2007, Kelley served in the Minnesota Senate and House of Representatives.

Kelley has had key roles in health care policy. He served on the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice for eight years and on the board of directors of Physicians Health Plan, the predecessor to Medica. In the legislature, he authored a number of bills related to health care quality, including the Minnesota Adverse Health Events Reporting Act.

For many years, Kelley was a lawyer practicing commercial litigation in Minneapolis. He is currently working on issues relating to science and math education, integrative leadership, design thinking, and public engagement with science.

He also serves on a number of nonprofit and advisory boards for organizations that work in civic education, youth development and STEM education, including Playworks Twin Cities, YMCA Youth in Government, SciMathMN and the Minnesota Humanities Center.

Kelley received a B.A. cum laude in political science and political economy from Williams College and his law degree from Columbia University.
