Magdalena A. Cichon

How does your Mayo Graduate School education compare to previous education that you have received at other institutions?
There is a lot of individual attention from the faculty because there are many more faculty members than students. Also, the broad choice of classes allows students to focus on specific areas of interest.

What opportunities have you been introduced to since being at Mayo Graduate School?
I have been able to attend conferences and present posters. I feel that because of the outstanding reputation of Mayo Clinic, my research is much more visible at conferences and in publications.

Why did you choose Mayo Graduate School?
I was very impressed by the focus on patient care and the translational approach to science.

How would you describe the atmosphere of Mayo Clinic?
It's a genuinely caring atmosphere where everybody wants everybody else to succeed.

What are your plans for the future?
I would like to continue my career in the field of cancer research, develop my skills and abilities, and become a highly trained and successful scientist.

If you could describe Mayo Clinic in one word, what would it be?
Collaborative.

With what activities are you involved in Jacksonville?
I spend most of my free time riding a road bike with a local cycling group.

How does Jacksonville differ from your hometown? College community?
Jacksonville is very different both from my hometown and the city where I lived during my undergraduate studies. Pulawy, where I grew up and lived until I graduated from high school, is a town in eastern Poland with a population of around 50,000. Living there I was able to walk everywhere. It was easy to know everyone that lived around me. Jacksonville is large and very spread out, so I really need a car to get around. Manchester, where I lived for three years during my undergraduate studies, is much more densely populated and the atmosphere is much busier. In Jacksonville I live at the beach, which has its own unique, laid-back atmosphere. There's nothing like living a short walk from the beach!
