How does your Mayo Graduate School education compare with previous education that you have received at other institutions?
At Mayo, the emphasis is on practical research experience, which is different from my undergraduate institution, which was more theoretical. Also, we didn't have an open-door policy at my undergrad institution. I love that I can drop in and discuss ideas with faculty members, especially since so many Mayo Graduate School faculty are well-known experts in their fields.
What opportunities have you been introduced to since being at Mayo Graduate School?
I was able to rotate with different labs based on my scientific interests, including one rotation in Florida, before making a decision on where I wanted to conduct my thesis research. Moreover, there are a lot of world-class scientists visiting Mayo. Not only have I been able to participate in their seminars, but I have also had the opportunity to go out to lunch with them and talk with them personally, which is important for building a scientific network.
Why did you choose Mayo Graduate School?
I was drawn to Mayo Clinic because of its state-of-the-art research program and international reputation. Since college I was very interested in pharmacology and molecular biology, and the program offered here is one of the best in the country, and I don't have to worry about funding. I'm involved in the pharmacogenomic research and love the fact that one day I could contribute to the design and development of the drugs based on individual needs.
How would you describe the atmosphere of Mayo Clinic?
Students, fellows and faculty members are very supportive of and collaborative with each other. There is always someone I can discuss my research ideas with or get help from if I need to learn a new technique. Faculty members try to direct students the best way, according to their scientific interests.
What are your plans for the future?
I'm still not certain exactly what the future holds for me, but I want to stay in the field of clinical pharmacology. Luckily Mayo has opened a lot of doors for me to choose from.
If you could describe Mayo Clinic in one word, what would it be?
With what activities are you involved in Rochester?
Outside of Mayo, I enjoy biking, running, volleyball and spending time with my new baby boy and husband. I'm also involved in various volunteer activities.
How does Rochester differ from your hometown? College community?
I moved to the U.S. from Poland, so Rochester is very different from my hometown of Torun, Poland in every way.
