Eddie Greene, M.D.
I initially came to Mayo Clinic in 1981 as a visiting medical student participating in a medical clerkship in surgical pathology. After subsequent training elsewhere, I returned.
Since then, I have had the chance to work with some of the best colleagues one could hope to associate with in medicine. They provide outstanding patient care, conduct research and help to educate the next generation of health care providers. What makes Mayo work for me are the opportunities to provide the best health care via high-quality clinical care, effective education, and innovative and relevant research.
In my role as the director of the Office for Diversity, I believe that appreciating diversity encompasses understanding the concept of mutual respect for each individual in our organization and for the people we serve. Appreciating diversity is also being able to recognize that although we may have differences in our backgrounds, cultures, outlooks and perspectives, we can learn to understand each other and work together on common values and goals that are mutually beneficial and valuable to all of us.
It is important that all of us as colleagues believe that we have the same opportunities to contribute the best parts of our talents, regardless of any pre-conceived differences. The philosophy of inclusion is important to making diversity work. Our goal is to help each individual feel valued for his or her contributions to enhance the functioning and betterment of Mayo and our community.
