David C. Herman, M.D., is a native of International Falls, Minn. He received his medical degree from Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn., and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education.
He was senior staff fellow in ocular immunology and uveitis at the National Eye Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. He received a Master of Science in medical management from The University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Herman is currently president and chief executive officer of Vidant Health, an integrated health care system with 10 hospitals and more than 50 clinics headquartered in Greenville, N.C.
Dr. Herman served on the Mayo Clinic staff from 1988 to 2011, where he was a professor of ophthalmology and program director of the Mayo Clinic Ophthalmology Residency. Dr. Herman was also chair of the Clinical Practice Committee at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, a member of the Rochester Executive Board, a member of the board of directors for Mayo Clinic Health System and a member of the Mayo Clinic Management Team.
He served eight years as a member of the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice and has served on the National Quality Forum (NQF) Outcomes Steering Committee, as well as chair of the NQF Ophthalmology Technical Advisory Panel. He also served on the board of trustees of the Minnesota Medical Association and on the board of directors of the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement.
He currently serves on the board of trustees of Ronald McDonald House Charities, the international charity that sponsors and supports Ronald McDonald Houses across the globe, and is serving as chair of the Ronald McDonald House Charities Program Committee.
