Amy M. Sainski

How does your Mayo Graduate School education compare with previous education that you have received at other institutions?
Mayo is more patient-based and disease-orientated than my previous institution. Our formal classroom training is more focused on what is currently happening in the field and is taught by members of that field who are world-renowned experts. We get to see published work, as well as work in progress from their labs and other collaborators in the field. Our research training encompasses not only bench techniques but also writing experience with papers and grants, and we receive guidance setting up collaborations with labs that will be of use throughout our careers. Through both classroom and bench experiences, our mentors and professors not only teach us about the science, they teach us how to think and become as good, or even better, than they are.

What opportunities have you been introduced to since being at Mayo Graduate School?
The opportunities that students are exposed to at Mayo are plentiful and diverse. My favorite opportunity is that I am receiving my classroom training in pharmacology but doing my research in virology.

Why did you choose Mayo Graduate School?
Mayo drives home the collaborative atmosphere and puts its students first. The deans, departmental chairs, principal investigators and professors seem to have a vested interest in their students and their students' careers. While having an amazing and supportive principal investigator is great, having a team of people who support and mentor me is better in my eyes for my future.

How would you describe the atmosphere of Mayo Clinic?
The atmosphere at Mayo Clinic is intellectually stimulating and collaborative.

What are your plans for the future?
My future plans include staying in the medical field and focusing on patient-based research.

If you could describe Mayo Clinic in one word, what would it be?
Collaborative.

With what activities are you involved in Rochester?
I am involved with recreational sport teams, and I volunteer in the community.
