How does Mayo education compare with previous education you've received at other institutions?

Mayo Clinic's facilities are incredible. Mayo allows you to take charge of your research. You can do so much with research here because you have access to the resources and the space to be creative, and study something that really excites you. I haven't really seen this luxury in any other institution that I visited or attended.

What opportunities have you been introduced to since being at Mayo?

I am interested in medicine and research, so normally you would think that I would pursue an M.D.-Ph.D. But at Mayo there is more than just this route. I could pursue an M.D.-Ph.D. or an M.D. What makes Mayo so different is that its medical practice is integrated with research, so I can get just an M.D. and still do research here.

Why did you choose Mayo Clinic over other medical institutions?

The people of Mayo Clinic are nice and warm. You don't find that at other institutions. It is hard to find someone who isn't on your project to help you perfect a technique or analyze data from a different angle, but here I've seen that. I was shocked the first time I experienced that. Usually people are centered on their own project and getting ahead that they don't stop to see if anyone needs help. If someone does need help, they don't stop to help them.

What is your program like? What sorts of projects or workshops have you done?

My program is intense, but really exciting. My project is actually a small part of a Ph.D. fellow's project. She is working with HH-Gli and TGF-beta and how the two pathways interact. It is very interesting and I am learning a lot.

How would you describe the atmosphere of Mayo Clinic?

It is very serious, but very warm and supportive. Mayo supports its employees, its students and its patients. It is an atmosphere in which one can grow and learn.

What is your everyday life like in Rochester?

I wake up and wonder what the weather is going to be like because I've noticed how erratic it is. I then go to the laboratory and have lots of fun with my experiments and with my fellow lab mates.

What are your plans for the future?

I will pursue an M.D.-Ph.D.

If you could describe Mayo in one word, what would it be?

Supportive.

With what activities are you involved in Rochester?

I like to visit the mall, and attend seminars and picnics.

How does Rochester differ from your hometown? College community?

Here people you don't know talk to you and everyone is so welcoming. Rochester is smaller than my college community, but the atmosphere is very similar.

Any other comments about Rochester, Mayo Clinic?

My experience at Mayo Clinic has been incredible. I really want to be a part of this wonderful institution.
