Florida
The Mayo Clinic Multidisciplinary Simulation Center in Florida provides team and individual skills training for staff physicians, residents, students, nurses and allied health professionals. Specially designed training areas include:
- Task training room. The task training room can be used to practice skills and specific surgical procedures. Learners can make use of numerous devices — including laparoscopic box trainers, a neurovascular virtual-reality simulator, cardiac and abdominal ultrasound simulator, laparoscopic and robotic surgical simulators, colonoscopy trainer and GI cart with scopes, and multiple airway trainers.
- Operating suite. The operating suite can be configured for different scenarios that will support individual skills training and multidisciplinary team training activities. Special features include a fully functional operating room table with life-size patient mannequins that can simulate changes in breathing, heart function and circulation. Other equipment is available to train staff to execute airway management simulations, manage active fluid infusion, monitor urinary collection, and document cases during and after procedures. A separate control room allows for instructor and staff interaction to enhance the learning environment. The suite is also outfitted with a closed-circuit anesthesia call system.
- Emergency room and intensive care unit suite. Outfitted with an intensive care headwall on one side of the room and the headwall and cabinetry seen in the emergency department on the other, this suite can support acute care scenarios and other common patient encounters. It can also be used to set up a familiar outpatient exam room. A functional call system is present to simulate calls for assistance and to signal a code situation from within the room.
- Debrief and conference room. Audiovisual technology is available to record or play back activity from any of the rooms within the simulation center or project scenarios or other training tools on a high-definition monitor. The room can accommodate up to 20 learners and be specially configured for small groups or classroom-style education.
