Student: Ann
Hometown: Davenport, Iowa
Program: Diagnostic Medical Sonography
I chose MSHS because Mayo could offer me the kind of education
that I wanted to fulfill my goal to become a sonographer –
a career that’s fascinated me since I was a junior in
high school.
Mayo has a wonderful staff that is willing to work with their
students, to help them understand every aspect of the medical
field. The people that you meet at Mayo, patients and staff,
are the best education that anyone could ask for. I'm really
glad that this is the profession I decided to explore. I can't
see myself anywhere else.

Program: Critical Care Pharmacy Practice Residency
I chose to attend MSHS due to the abundance
of learning opportunities and access to some of the best resources
in the world. The program was very organized and centered around
the individual learning. I visited the campus prior to committing
to the program, on my visit I could feel the energy of all those
associated with the clinic. I knew it would be a great learning
atmosphere.
This is my second year of residency in the pharmacy residency
programs. I chose to do the critical care residency because I knew
that Mayo treats some of the most difficult cases in the country.
I wanted to get the broadest coverage of disease states, and learn
from top practitioners. After being here for a year before starting
my Critical Care residency, I knew that the patient always comes
first and all the efforts of the hospital staff are centered around
that idea.
I feel I am very prepared to go into practice as a Critical care
pharmacist, that is the ultimate goal of any health sciences education.
Confidence comes with knowledge and to be the best practitioner
you can you need to have confidence in your abilities. My education
at Mayo has provided me the confidence to practice successfully.
My conclusion, after comparing several offers, is that Mayo is
a special place to work and take care of patients. People are very
satisfied with the job they do and it shows in the care we provide.
As a result of my search, I decided to stay and take a position
in one of our critical care units. It’s the best decision
I have made, even though my family is 1,500 miles West.

Hometown: Swalesdale, Iowa
Program: Radiation Therapy
I chose MSHS due to the large amount of
opportunity and support available to each student. The facilities
and resources utilized are outstanding, state-of-the-art, well organized
and easily accessible. The cost is low and financial aid and scholarships
are accessible to all.
I had already received my education as a radiologic technologist.
I liked this field of work, but wanted more interaction with
patients. In radiation therapy, I am able to get to know the
patients that I am helping. Touching each person that I meet.
The benefits of Mayo are the advanced technology, which creates
learning opportunities not available in any other location,
and the continuous support of the staff. This makes adapting
to a new area and job so much easier. MSHS makes you feel
like you are part of a family.
I feel that I have been well prepared for the career I will soon
begin. I have the ability to adapt to any situation and join in
the workforce immediately. I would not trade the education I received
here for anything. There is nothing that would have made this year
feel more rewarding.

Student: Chris
Hometown: Grand Forks, ND
Program: Clinical Laboratory Sciences (Medical Technology Internship)
Academic Affiliate: University of North Dakota
I had nearly 20 choices for clinical sites
to serve an internship. Of these choices, Mayo stood head and shoulders
above the rest, and was an easy choice to make.
I have always been interested in health care, specifically the
microscopic aspect of the human body. Medical technologists perform
a very important role that is often overlooked. I wanted to be part
of that important team that is essential for the diagnosis and treatment
of disease.
The education here is outstanding. I knew I would have an opportunity
to see many things here that most students would only read about
in a textbook. I feel I learned many important things that will
help me in the future. The program has given me a solid core knowledge
of the profession, and helped me become a competent entry-level
graduate into the field of medical technology.

Program: Clinical Neurophysiology Technology
I chose MSHS because of the quality education
that Mayo offers. I think with the CNT Program you have options
of working in different areas, which makes it more interesting,
and learning how our brain works is amazing.
Being able to do hands-on training prepares you for real world.
All instructors are very friendly, easy to talk to and always willing
to help. Mayo is one of the best clinics in the world and getting
your education here will mean a lot to potential employer.

Student: Jon
Hometown: Rochester, Minn.
Program: Physical Therapy
I love working with people. I really enjoy
motivating patients and clients on their way to recovery. The daily
variety and diversity of patients lends itself to a challenging
work environment, where I can use my problem-solving skills and
creativity to best treat that individual.
I was most impressed with Mayo’s commitment to clinical education.
Students are placed in a variety of clinical settings right away.
Almost every week when the program starts we spend an afternoon
in the clinic, so we are able to gain experience and apply what
we learn in class.
I was also impressed with the teaching both from faculty and clinical
experts. The faculty have diverse interests and really enjoy working
with the students. They will challenge you and see you through to
success.
The patient population is another reason I chose Mayo Clinic.
People come from all over to be treated here, so I feel I have seen
things in my clinical experiences that I may not have seen elsewhere.
The facilities are great, too! The anatomy lab, reference libraries,
and classrooms all contribute to an environment conducive learning
and having fun.
The reputation of the Mayo Clinic is far-reaching. A degree from
here is well recognized, should I decide to go outside of the Midwest
during my career.
The PT program has given me the knowledge and confidence to make
competent and caring medical decisions with my patients.
