Program Description
Mayo School of Health Sciences (MSHS) offers a 21-month Sonography program with campuses in Rochester, Minn., and Jacksonville, Fla. This program provides comprehensive clinical knowledge and skills to help students become competent entry-level sonographers and vascular technolgists. Academic lectures originate primarily from the Rochester campus and are available to the Jacksonville students through a state-of-the-art, interactive video-enabled classroom. This system goes beyond traditional distance education and allows live, face-to-face collaboration between students and faculty.

Facilities:

Rochester, Minn. Campus
The Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minn., comprises an extensive outpatient complex, Saint Marys Hospital and Rochester Methodist Hospital, and substantial research and education facilities. This Mayo site is among the largest, most advanced medical centers in the world.

State-of-the-art ultrasound scanners are available at more than 50 scanning stations throughout the Mayo Clinic complex in Rochester. In 2008, Mayo staff in Rochester performed nearly 85,000 sonographic and vascular procedures.

Primarily, clinical education takes place on the Mayo Clinic campus, including the ultrasound departments of Radiology, Vascular Medicine, and Obstetrics & Gynecology.  


Jacksonville, Fla. Campus

State-of-the-art  ultrasound scanners are available throughout Mayo Clinic Florida. In 2008, Mayo staff in Jacksonville performed more than 35,000 sonographic and vascular procedures.

Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., is a comprehensive medical facility providing advanced programs in education and research, which support the highest-quality patient care. Campus activity is conducted around the Mayo Clinic hospital and interconnected Davis, Mayo and Cannaday buildings.

The ambulatory facilities provide clinical services ranging from primary to specialty care and advanced procedures. Mayo Clinic hospital provides comprehensive inpatient services, including surgical and medical intensive care units, specialized solid-organ transplant units, and advanced cardiac and neurosurgery facilities.


Graduation and Certification
Students who complete the Sonography Program receive a Certificate of Completion from Mayo School of Health Sciences.  Before graduation, students are required to take the Sonography Principles & Instrumentation examination given by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).  Graduates of the program may then apply to take the professional certification examinations given by either the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).  Graduates will be eligible to apply for abdominal, OB/GYN, and Vascular Technology certification examinations. 

Hours
For the majority of the program, your learning schedule will include eight-hour days, five days per week.

Class Size
Each year, Mayo School of Health Sciences admits up to 12 students into its Sonography Program. Up to ten student positions are located at the Rochester, Minn., campus and two are located at the Jacksonville, Fla., campus.
