Program Description
Students enrolled in the Radiation Therapy Program at Florida Community College at Jacksonville (FCCJ) have the option to complete a portion of their clinical rotations at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville.

The certificate program, offered by FCCJ, is 12 months in length and is offered to individuals that have a current radiography license. All prerequisites must be met in order to apply to the Radiation Therapy Program at FCCJ.

Students in the program rotate through several clinical sites to ensure comprehensive learning and experience. Rotations include:

  • Simulation
  • Dosimetry
  • Block room
  • HDR and Stereotactic radiosurgery
  • Treatment rooms

Accreditation
FCCJ, which offers the programs in radiation therapy, is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Mayo Foundation is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission.

Facilities
Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., opened in 1986 as a premier academic medical center in the southeastern United States, where medical research and education are integrated with clinical practice to deliver the highest-quality patient care.

While on rotation at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, you will gain experience with the following equipment used in radiation therapy:

  • Varian 600 C Linear Accelerator
  • Varian 23 IX with On-Board Imaging and Cone Beam CT
  • GE CT Simulator
  • Varian 23 EX Linear Accelerator - with brain lab and respiratory gating equipment
  • Varian Ximatron Simulator
  • Phillips Treatment Planning System for 3D conformal and IMRT planning
  • Radionics “X-Knife” for stereotactic radiosurgery planning
  • “Variseed” for planning prostate implants
  • IMPAC to record and verify all treatments

Graduation and Certification
Upon successful completion of the one-year certificate program in radiation therapy, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from FCCJ and be eligible to take the registry exam conducted by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in radiation therapy technology.

Hours
For the majority of the internship rotations, your learning schedule will include two to four eight-hour days per week, with the time gradually increasing each semester.
