Program Description
Students enrolled in the Respiratory Care baccalaureate program at our affiliate education institution, University of Minnesota, complete their final two years of training at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and other facilities within Mayo Health System.
Three primary factors make Mayo Clinic an ideal educational setting
for you to receive your respiratory care training:

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Respiratory Care (BAS-RC) Program
is an upper-division academic program designed to prepare students
to become respiratory care practitioners with advanced-level clinical
skills.
The program builds on lower-division transfer curriculum in liberal
arts and the health sciences. The Respiratory Care Program combines
professional, medical and technical curriculum to promote professional
advancement and clinical specialization in respiratory care.
Classes and clinical experiences are offered at Mayo Clinic in
Rochester and other facilities within Mayo Health System.
The Respiratory Care Program:
- Prepares students to become respiratory care
practitioners with advanced-level clinical skills.
- Provides students with a background in liberal
arts.
- Provides professional courses and clinical experiences
to support professional career advancement.
- Prepares advanced practitioner respiratory therapists
to serve as consultants to physicians and other medical staff.
- Offers students options for specialized clinical
study, including:
- Adult critical care and patient transport
- Newborn and pediatric critical care
- Cardiopulmonary diagnostics-pulmonary function testing
- Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, case management in asthma and
chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), and smoking cessation
and lung health counseling
The program is also designed for existing respiratory care graduates
from certificate or associate’s degree programs who want to
advance their professional abilities, develop skills in respiratory
care clinical subspecialties, and obtain a baccalaureate degree
to enhance and promote professional advancement in respiratory care.

Mayo School of Health Sciences and University of Minnesota’s
Respiratory Care Program is accredited by
The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs
(CAAHEP) in conjunction with the Committee
on Accreditation of Respiratory Care (CoARC).
Mayo Foundation and University of Minnesota-Rochester Center are
accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools

Facilities
The Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester comprises an extensive outpatient complex, two hospitals and research and education facilities. It is among the largest, most advanced medical centers in the world.
Mayo Clinic’s inpatient care facilities – Rochester Methodist Hospital and Saint Marys Hospital – and its Emergency Medicine team administer respiratory testing and respiratory care therapy to thousands of patients each year.
Graduation and Certification
When you successfully complete the Respiratory Care Program, you
will receive a Bachelor of Applied Science in Respiratory Care from the University of Minnesota and a certificate of completion, jointly awarded by
the University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, School of Health Sciences.
Upon successful completion of the junior-year course work, students
will be eligible to complete the National Board for Respiratory
Care (NBRC) entry level professional certification examination,
leading to the certified respiratory therapist (CRT) credential
and state licensure.
After successful completion of the senior-year course work, you
will be awarded the Bachelor of Applied Science in Respiratory Care
from the University of Minnesota and will be eligible to complete
the NBRC board examinations to attain the Registered Respiratory
Therapist (RRT) credential.
You also will participate in an extensive exam review before the
end of your junior and senior year.
Hours
For the majority of the internship, your learning schedule will include eight-hour days, five days per week.
Class Size
Each year, Mayo School of Health Sciences and the University of
Minnesota admit 20 students to the Respiratory Care Program. This
ensures you will receive close one-on-one instruction and a comprehensive
educational experience.
