Respiratory Therapy

Program Description
Students enrolled in the Respiratory Care baccalaureate program at our affiliate education institution, University of Minnesota, complete their final two years of training at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and other facilities within Mayo Health System.

Three primary factors make Mayo Clinic an ideal educational setting for you to receive your respiratory care training:

  • The breadth of respiratory conditions and care procedures you’ll experience
  • The large volume of patients requiring respiratory testing and therapy
  • A diverse and highly educated faculty committed to your success

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Respiratory Care (BAS-RC) Program is an upper-division academic program designed to prepare students to become respiratory care practitioners with advanced-level clinical skills.

The program builds on lower-division transfer curriculum in liberal arts and the health sciences. The Respiratory Care Program combines professional, medical and technical curriculum to promote professional advancement and clinical specialization in respiratory care.

Classes and clinical experiences are offered at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and other facilities within Mayo Health System.

The Respiratory Care Program:

  • Prepares students to become respiratory care practitioners with advanced-level clinical skills.
  • Provides students with a background in liberal arts.
  • Provides professional courses and clinical experiences to support professional career advancement.
  • Prepares advanced practitioner respiratory therapists to serve as consultants to physicians and other medical staff.
  • Offers students options for specialized clinical study, including:

    - Adult critical care and patient transport

    - Newborn and pediatric critical care

    - Cardiopulmonary diagnostics-pulmonary function testing

    - Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, case management in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), and smoking cessation and lung health counseling

The program is also designed for existing respiratory care graduates from certificate or associate’s degree programs who want to advance their professional abilities, develop skills in respiratory care clinical subspecialties, and obtain a baccalaureate degree to enhance and promote professional advancement in respiratory care.
