Program Description
Your educational experience will be centered in a challenging, quality-oriented practice and learning environment with a diverse patient population, and amongst a faculty dedicated to promoting teamwork and the profession of pharmacy.

Your experiences will include:

• Designing and managing therapeutic regimens, establishing outcomes and associated monitoring parameters for hospitalized and ambulatory patients.
• Participating in clinical and operational services that support safe medication use processes.
• Training in pharmacy management to allow an understanding of the integration of services and programs that support departmental mission and goals.
• Investigating a particular element of pharmacy as a research project.
• Training in medical informatics to support safe medication use processes and enhancement of pharmaceutical care.

Accreditation
The Pharmacy Post-Graduate Year 1 Residency Program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).

Mayo Foundation is also accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission.

Facilities
Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville was established in 1986 as a comprehensive medical facility in the southeastern United States, where advanced programs in education and research support the highest-quality patient care.

Campus activity is centered around the Mayo Clinic hospital and interconnected Davis, Mayo and Cannaday buildings.

The ambulatory facilities provide clinical services ranging from primary to specialty care, and advanced procedural facilities.

The inpatient facility, Mayo Clinic hospital is a 214 bed facility that provides a wide variety of comprehensive clinical services, including surgical and medical intensive care units, specialized solid-organ transplant units, and advanced cardiac and neurosurgery facilities.

The state-of-the-art Birdsall Medical Research Building is a center for neurological disease research. The Griffin Cancer Research Building was completed in 2001 to support oncology research.

Pharmacy Services
The Department of Pharmacy employs approximately 70 clinical and support staff, including 36 pharmacists. Comprehensive pharmaceutical services include:

• Disease-state directed practice
• Pharmacist specialty practices
• Advanced automation and technology support, including wireless PC’s, automated dispensing cabinets and clinical decision support tools
• Investigational drug services
• Pharmacokinetic and anti-coagulant monitoring
• Target drug monitoring programs, including renal dosing, IV to PO conversions, therapeutic interchange
• Ambulatory Pharmacotherapy Consultant services
• Drug Information Center
• Sterile and non-sterile compounding
• Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee programs and newsletter

Mayo Clinic utilizes an electronic medical record, computerized physician order entry, computerized outpatient prescription entry and a computer-based monitoring system to provide advanced pharmaceutical care. This system integrates data from pharmacy, laboratory, microbiology and admissions and utilizes specific algorithms to alert pharmacists to potential situations where therapy, safety or costs can be positively impacted.

The electronic medical record provides an opportunity to:  

• Review patient demographic, laboratory, and microbiology data; medications; and drug levels during medication profile review, while on team rounds and during dispensing activities.
• Identify patients whose medication therapy requires a pharmacist’s daily review.
• Identify and review treatments that are inconsistent with established medication rule-based algorithms.
• Document pharmacist-performed clinical activities and interventions.

Graduation and Certification
Upon successful completion of your Pharmacy Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) Residency, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from the College of Medicine, Mayo School of Health Sciences.

Graduates of the Mayo Clinic Pharmacy Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) Residency have consistently found immediate employment in academia, hospital pharmacy practice and ambulatory practice. Approximately one-third of the program’s graduates have accepted positions within Mayo Clinic Pharmacy.
