Clinical Training
The
Post-Graduate Year 1 Pharmacy
Residency Program consists of comprehensive
practice training utilizing the ASHP Residency Learning System to
focus on learning and ensure goal achievement. Required areas of
instruction are: Acute patient care, ambulatory patient care, practice
management,
medication use, medical informatics, pharmaceutical investigation
and practice coverage.
Acute Patient Care
As a member of the Mayo Clinic health-care team working with pharmacist
specialists, you will design, recommend, monitor and evaluate patient-specific
therapeutic regimens that incorporate the principles of evidence-based
medicine. Areas of practice include
internal medicine and
critical care.
Ambulatory Patient Care
You will gain experience in the many facets of our ambulatory practice
with an emphasis on patient education and the identification and
resolution of patient specific medication-related problems. Development
of therapeutic recommendations monitoring plans is integral to the
care of our ambulatory patients. The primary areas of practice are
Pharmacotherapy
Consultations
and Family Medicine Clinic.
Practice Management
During this time, you will acquire a thorough understanding of departmental philosophy and mission, regulatory requirements and skills to identify and solve practice problems using policy development. You will learn leadership and project management skills and exercise these skills by working as a committee member.
Medication Use Policy Management & Medication Safety
The key focus of this experience will be learning how to utilize data to create a safe, high-quality medication use process. This will be occur through participation in medication use evaluations, protocol and guideline development, and the medication event reporting and adverse drug reaction reporting programs. An understanding of formulary management activities are provided in addition to experiences gained by working in a formal Drug Information Center.
Medical Informatics
As a member of the Pharmacy Automation & Technology Team, you will gain a thorough understanding of medication database management and clinical decision support tools and their role in reducing medical errors in an inpatient and ambulatory setting. You will learn the regulatory requirements for an electronic medical record in multiple patient care settings.
Pharmaceutical Investigation
You will be required to complete a research project. The project may be original research or development, enhancement or evaluation of some aspect of pharmacy operation and delivery of services for patient care. A faculty member will serve as your Resident Research Associate to guide you. Your research will be presented on national, regional and local levels during the residency year. A manuscript of publishable quality is required prior to program completion and submission Publication is highly encouraged.
Practice Coverage
Through practice coverage, you are given the opportunity to
develop your practice skills in providing total pharmaceutical care
for your patients. Additionally, you should develop the skills necessary
to function as an independent confident practitioner. You will be scheduled one evening a week, and every fourth weekend for inpatient care and one day every month in community pharmacy.

The rotation schedule for the 12-month Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency will include:

Evaluation
Educational outcomes and goals for the Post-Graduate Year 1 pharmacy resident training have been established by ASHP and rotation activities have been to provide a support learning and performance expectations. The Residency Learning System is used to provide ongoing feedback to assist with the development of your skills to ensure you meet the goals established.
