Program Description
Pharmacists successfully completing the one-year PGY1 Pediatric Pharmacy Practice Residency will be proficient practitioners providing advanced pharmaceutical care services to pediatric patients.
You will understand how to manage a pharmacy practice effectively
and efficiently, while demonstrating professional maturity and sound
ethical character.
While interacting with health-care professionals, residents, students,
patients and their caregivers to optimize drug therapy outcomes,
you will learn to communicate effectively and demonstrate excellent
interpersonal skills.
The skills needed to evaluate the literature and to conduct a major
project will be developed and refined. You will be able to identify
and promulgate drug use policies in cooperation with medical staff
and administration. A commitment to the process of personal continuous
improvement will be evident.

Facilities
The Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester is comprised of an extensive
outpatient complex, Saint Marys Hospital, Rochester Methodist Hospital
as well as multiple research and education facilities. It is among
the largest, most advanced medical centers in the world.
Mayo Eugenia Litta Children's Hospital is a "hospital within a hospital" at the Saint Marys Hospital campus. The Children's Hospital is an 94-bed hospital in which all major pediatric subspecialties are represented: 12 pediatric intensive care beds, 30 neonatal intensive care beds, 44 general floor care beds, a four-bed transplant unit and four pediatric ambulatory infusion therapy beds. Pediatric pharmacy service is provided from a decentral environment 16 hours (0700 - 2300) per day. Daily pharmaceutical services include:
- Medical team rounds participation
- Pharmacokinetic monitoring
- Medication Reconciliation
- Pharm D. clerkship rotations
- Drug information programs
- In-service education
- Discharge medication counseling
- Unit dose drug distribution
- Intravenous admixture
- Pharmaceutical compounding
- Pharmacy and therapeutics committee support
- Investigational drug studies
Graduation and Certification
Upon successful completion of your Pediatric Pharmacy Practice Residency,
you will receive a Certificate of Completion from Mayo Clinic College
of Medicine, Mayo School of Health Sciences.
To successfully complete this residency, you must:
- Obtain a minimum of 2,000 hours of training time
over no less than 50 weeks.
- Meet the behavioral objectives for each rotation
and for the program in general.
- Complete a research project satisfactorily.
- Contribute to providing the best patient care
and to achieving the mission and goals of Pharmacy Services.
Positions
Each year, Mayo School of Health Sciences admits one resident to
its Pediatric Pharmacy Practice Residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
This ensures you will receive a comprehensive educational experience
with close one-on-one instruction.
