Prerequisites: Pharmacy student at Creighton University, Drake University, North Dakota State University or the University of Minnesota; OR have completed a pharmacy internship at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Preapproval is required.

Program Description
Mayo Clinic Pharmacy offers a variety of five-week clerkship rotations to students completing their final year of pharmacy school. Individuals completing the ambulatory care rotation will further develop their skills in providing medication therapy management to a variety of patients. The pharmacy management rotation is designed to expose the student to issues affecting pharmacy management, and the pharmacy research rotation allows the student to explore the pharmacist’s role in outpatient dispensing of investigational medication.

Facilities
The Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester is comprised of an extensive outpatient complex, two hospitals, as well as multiple research and education facilities. It is among the largest, most advanced medical centers in the world.

Mayo Clinic Pharmacy
Mayo Clinic Pharmacy employs about 200 people, including approximately 60 pharmacists. The pharmacies operate seven days a week and provide pharmaceutical services, including:

  • Patient counseling
  • Pharmacy specialty practices
  • Investigational drug studies
  • Patient education programs
  • Prescription compounding
  • Drug information programs
  • In-service education
  • Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee support

Mayo Clinic’s electronic medical record uses two computer programs, Documents Browser and MICS LastWord, to document patient care. Information contained in these systems includes patient demographics, provider notes from each appointment, provider orders (including prescription orders), laboratory and microbiology results, patient allergies, immunization records, and upcoming appointments. Pharmacists at Mayo Clinic use this information to assist in their management of a patient’s medication therapy.

Hours
For the majority of the clerkship experience, your learning schedule will include eight-hour days, five days per week.

Positions
Mayo School of Health Sciences admits up to 12 students each year based on affiliation agreements with Creighton University, Drake University, North Dakota State University, and the University of Minnesota. The program also admits students who have previously completed a pharmacy internship at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
