Program Description
Pharmacy students who successfully complete 4 to 8 weeks of clerkship rotations will further develop their skills to provide pharmaceutical care to a variety of patients. While interacting with health care professionals, residents, students, patients and their caregivers to optimize drug therapy outcomes, you will learn to communicate effectively and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.

Facilities
Mayo Clinic in Florida was established in 1986 as a comprehensive medical facility in the southeastern United States, where advanced programs in education and research support the highest-quality patient care. Campus activity is centered around the Mayo Clinic hospital and interconnected Davis, Mayo, and Cannady buildings.
The ambulatory facilities provide clinical services ranging from primary to specialty care and advanced procedures. Mayo Clinic hospital provides comprehensive inpatient services, including surgical and medical intensive care units, specialized solid-organ transplant units, and advanced cardiac and neurosurgery facilities.
Pharmacy Services
The Department of Pharmacy at Mayo Clinic in Florida employs approximately 70 clinical and support staff, including 36 pharmacists. Comprehensive pharmaceutical services include:
- Disease-state directed practice
- Pharmacy specialty practices
- Advanced automation and technology support, including wireless laptops, automated dispensing cabinets and clinical decision support tools
- Investigational drug services
- Pharmacokinetic and anti-coagulant monitoring
- Target drug monitoring programs, including renal dosing, intravenous or oral therapy conversions, therapeutic interchange
- Ambulatory Pharmacotherapy Consultant Services
- Drug Information Center
- Sterile and non-sterile compounding
- Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee programs and newsletter
Mayo Clinic utilizes an electronic medical record, computerized physician order entry, computerized outpatient prescription entry, and a computer-based monitoring system to provide advanced pharmaceutical care. This system integrates data from pharmacy, laboratory microbiology and admissions and uses specific algorithms to alert pharmacists to potential situations where therapy, safety or costs can be positively impacted.
The electronic medical record provides an opportunity to:
- Review patient demographic, laboratory and microbiology data; medications; and drug levels during medication profile review, while on team rounds and during dispensing activities.
- Identify patients whose medication therapy requires a pharmacist's daily review.
- Identify and review treatments that are inconsistent with established medication rule-based algorithms.
- Document pharmacist-performed clinical activities, interventions and monitoring notes.
Hours
For the majority of the clerkship experience, your learning schedule will include eight-hour days, five days per week.
Positions
Mayo School of Health Sciences (MSHS) admits students each year based on affiliation agreements with the University of Florida, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, South University School of Pharmacy and Wingate University. Applicants must be preapproved by Mayo Clinic Pharmacy Services Department.
