Teaching Faculty
The Mayo School of Health Sciences Occupational Therapy Internship draws its faculty from Mayo Clinic’s clinical, scientific and technical staffs. They are chosen for their commitment to teaching as well as clinical practice and/or research.
During your internship, you will have a primary staff supervisor and interact with occupational therapy staff members. You will have access to these individuals throughout your training – with the opportunity to learn directly from experienced therapists.
Visiting Professors/Lecturers
A hallmark of higher education excellence is the breadth and depth of information and experience provided students by the faculty and visiting experts. Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic to lecture on their areas of medical and scientific expertise each year. As a student of Mayo School of Health Sciences, you are encouraged to attend all conferences, lectures and seminars prepared for students, residents, fellows and consulting staff.
Heidi Dunfee, PT, DScPT
Dr. Heidi Dunfee is the Center Coordinator of Clinical Education with the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. She received her DScPT degree from University of Maryland. Dr. Dunfee has been a physical therapist for 25 years and has been a clinical education coordinator on an acute rehabilitation unit for over 18 years having worked with over 650 students on their clinical experiences. Dr. Dunfee has been a recipient of the Signe Brunnstrom Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching through the APTA. She has served two roles with the Education Section of the APTA - the Clinical Education Co-Chair of the Clinical Education Special Interest Group and the Secretary for the Education Section. She is an APTA Clinical Instructor Trainer for both the Basic and the Advanced Clinical Instructor and Credentialing Program and a member of the Clinical Instructor Education Board. Dr. Dunfee is an instructor in physical therapy with the Mayo School of Health Sciences Physical Therapy Program and a volunteer faculty with the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
Donna Heinle OTR/L, BCPR, OTD
Donna joined the staff at Mayo in 1988 as a staff therapist. She is currently the Clinical Education Coordinator in a collaborative student model for level II fieldwork occupational therapy students on the rehabilitation unit at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN. She is currently involved with developing OT competencies, training and developing a clinical ladder at Mayo Clinic, Rochester. She is working on research involving clinical guidelines for spinal cord injured persons and reflective learning for level II occupational therapy students. Donna has worked as an occupational therapist in a variety of settings including, physical disabilities, mental health, pediatrics, developmentally disabled adults and children. Donna has presented at local, state and national conferences. She graduated in 1981 from the University of North Dakota with a BS degree in occupational therapy and in 2008 from the University of St. Augustine Florida with a doctorate degree in occupational therapy. In 2007 Donna became Board Certified in Physical Medicine by AOTA.
Tamra Trenary OTR/L, BCPR, OTD
Tamra joined the staff at Mayo in 1998 as a staff therapist. She is currently the Clinical Education Coordinator in a collaborative student model for Level II fieldwork occupational therapy students in acute care – physical disabilities at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN. She is presently involved with developing a multi –tier clinical mentorship program for staff. Her research interests and projects involve the rationing of health care and the ethical implications and the impact of the collaborative model in clinical education for students. Tamra has worked as an occupational therapist in a variety of settings including physical disabilities, mental health, pain rehabilitation, industrial rehabilitation, and skilled nursing facilities. Tamra has presented at state conferences. She graduated in 1996 from the College of St. Scholastica with a MA degree in occupational therapy. In 2008, she graduated from the University of St. Augustine Florida with a doctorate degree in occupational therapy. In 2008, Tamra became Board Certified in Physical Medicine by AOTA.
