Clinical experiences and learning include:

  • Comprehensive assessment of the health status of individuals and families.
  • Management of common acute and chronic health problems.
  • Provision of counseling and teaching in areas of health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Collaboration with other health-care professionals.

Intensive clinical practicums include clinical rotations in primary care clinics, as well as general internal medicine. You may select:

  • Congestive heart clinic
  • Women's heart clinic
  • Vascular center
  • Lipid clinic
  • Hypertension clinic

You will rotate regularly to one or more areas for approximately six weeks to become familiar with the care of complex cases. Concurrently, you will continue to care for your primary care patients in either Family Medicine,Preventive/Occupational Medicine,or Primary Care Internal Medicine.

During these clinical rotations, you will be under the supervision of qualified nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physician preceptors.

Our nurse practitioner education prepares you to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a health-care team.

Grading or Evaluation
Mayo School of Health Sciences uses evaluative tools that include:

  • Demonstration of skills
  • Self-assessment exercises
  • Faculty visits (one or two per clinical rotation)

Our system of evaluation provides students and faculty with a comprehensive look at individual performance, allowing students who are experiencing academic difficulty to be directed to appropriate support resources, including tutoring programs and counseling opportunities.
