Program Description
Mayo School of Health Sciences (MSHS) offers a Medical Social Services
Graduate Internship Program at Mayo Clinic in Arizona.
This program, which lasts one academic year or two consecutive semesters,
provides in-depth clinical knowledge and skills that enable practitioners
to deliver comprehensive social services in both clinical and hospital
settings.
The Medical Social Services Graduate Internship Program provides
the high-quality didactic and clinical experiences needed to create
a well-rounded, fully competent medical social worker. At Mayo Clinic
you will:
- Learn at an internationally renowned medical
center that includes a large designated cancer center and organ
transplantation program.
- Work with Mayo Clinic physicians, social workers
and other allied health professionals as a respected member of
the patient care team.
- Serve a large, diverse patient population with
common and uncommon medical conditions.
As a medical social services intern, you will help patients and
their families cope with chronic, acute or terminal illnesses, addressing
problems that impede recovery or rehabilitation.
You may organize support groups for families of patients undergoing
organ transplants or suffering from cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's disease
or other illnesses.
You will also advise family caregivers, counsel patients, and
help plan for patients' needs after discharge by arranging at-home
services, from meals-on-wheels to oxygen equipment.

Facilities
Mayo Clinic in Arizona opened in 1987 as a premiere academic medical center in the southwestern United States, where advanced programs in medical research and education support the highest-quality patient care.
Scottsdale Campus is centered around a beautiful five-story outpatient clinic. This modern facility contains 240 exam rooms, an outpatient surgery center equipped for general anesthesia, a full-service laboratory, a pharmacy, a patient-education library, an endoscopy suite and a 188-seat auditorium for patient, staff and student education programs. Services in more than 66 medical and surgical disciplines are provided, including programs in cancer treatment and organ transplantation.
The Scottsdale Campus offers excellent education facilities, including classrooms, lecture halls, an extensive library and computer lab. The Samuel C. Johnson Research Center, a 75,000-square-foot building, houses scientists, trainees and students focused on molecular genetics, molecular immunology, molecular and cell biology, molecular chemistry and surgical research.
On the Phoenix Campus, the state-of-the-art 205-bed Mayo Clinic Hospital, which opened in 1998, is the first hospital entirely designed and built by Mayo. It has been recognized as "the Best Hospital in Phoenix" several times by Phoenix magazine.
Both Mayo Clinic’s outpatient and inpatient facilities provide
the training areas for the Medical Social Services Graduate Internship.
In some cases, students also have access to community-based educational
opportunities with Mayo Clinic-based programs and facilities.
Mayo Clinic's state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and research
facilities enhance student clinical experiences and the ability
for clinical preceptors to provide high-quality clinical education
experiences.
Graduation and Certification
Upon successful completion of the Medical Social Services Graduate
Internship Program, you will receive a Certificate of Completion
from Mayo School of Health Sciences, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
If this residency completes your program requirements at your affiliate
school, you will also receive your master’s degree from that
college or university.
Hours
For the majority of the internship, your learning schedule will
be determined by the requirements of your university program, usually
eight-hour days, two days per week.
Class Size
Each year, Mayo School of Health Sciences admits one to two interns
to its Medical Social Services Graduate Internship Program. This
ensures that students receive one-on-one instruction and a comprehensive
educational experience.
The program includes interaction with many Mayo Clinic patient
care staff, including medical social workers, nurses, physicians,
other allied health-care professionals and administrators.
