The Mayo School of Health Sciences Genetic Counseling Laboratory Internship Program prepares individuals for professional practice in genetic testing and laboratory genetic counseling. During the program, learning experiences are provided to allow the intern to:

  • Work collaboratively with board-certified genetic counselors, laboratory directors and medical geneticists in laboratory and medical genetics
  • Obtain knowledge and experience in the field of genetic testing and laboratory genetic counseling
  • Identify appropriate use of tests, and articulate limitations, accuracy and possible testing outcomes
  • Review clinical and family information necessary for scheduling of appropriate tests and proper interpretation of test results
  • Track and coordinate complex cases requiring special attention through the laboratory
  • Review results and interpretations in genetic reports
  • Observe reporting of results to a third party
  • Observe follow-up for patients with positive or ambiguous results
  • Develop and present informational seminar to Mayo staff
  • Attend in-house genetic conferences

Participation in the activities listed above will be based on the length and scope of the rotation.
