Positions
A limited number of applicants are accepted each year for the Genetic Counseling Laboratory Internship Program at Mayo Clinic Rochester. The number of interns accepted will depend on the number of applicants and the qualifications of each.
Application and all supporting documentation must be received by February 1 of the year you wish to begin.
How to Apply
Step 1: Complete the following sections in the Mayo School of Health Sciences online application form:
1. Program of Interest
Program Name: Genetic Counseling
Program Type: Genetic Counseling Laboratory Internship
Campus: Rochester
Start Date: Summer of the year you wish to participate. (Specific dates will be selected in essay portion).
2. Personal and Demographic Data
3. Education
Skip sections 4-6
7. Essay (follow online instructions for uploading into your application)
Please write a one page personal letter addressing the following questions:
- Describe your interest in laboratory genetic counseling.
- What prior laboratory experiences have you had thus far?
- What are your goals for this laboratory internship?
- How do you plan to use the knowledge and skills gained from this internship
- The following 2 week internships are available: At the end of your personal letter, please rank the tracks you would like to apply (you will only be selected for one).
- Track 1: June 2-13, 2008

Track 3: July 28-Aug 8, 2008
- Please include a list of courses, clinical rotations and laboratory experiences that will be completed by the proposed start date. These can be included at the end of your personal letter document or sent separately if they are in a different format.
Recommendations (use online recommendation form) – Please provide a minimum of two recommendations. Please include your program director as one of your references.
Step 2: Submit the following materials:
- List of courses, clinical rotations and laboratory experiences that will be completed by the proposed start date of the internship
- Immunization record
Please send the required materials that are NOT completed online, plus any transcripts not sent electronically to MSHS, in one envelope to:

Step 3: The selection committee carefully reviews each application. Students accepted to the Genetic Counseling Internship Program will be notified in writing.
