Positions
A limited number of applicants are accepted each year for the Genetic Counseling Laboratory Internship Program at Mayo Clinic Rochester. The number of interns accepted will depend on the number of applicants and the qualifications of each.
Application and all supporting documentation must be received by midnight, February 1 of the year you wish to begin.
How to Apply
Step 1: Complete the following sections in the Mayo School of Health Sciences online application form:

Start Date: The following 2 week internship is available for the summer for 2009:
June 1-12, 2009

- Essay (follow online instructions for uploading into your application)
Please write a one page personal letter addressing the following questions:
- Describe your interest in laboratory genetic counseling.
- What prior laboratory experiences have you had thus far?
- What are your goals for this laboratory internship?
- How do you plan to use the knowledge and skills gained from this internship
- Following your 1 page essay, please rank the following laboratory experiences in order of preference, 1-3 with 1 indicating the area of greatest preference.
- Biochemical Genetics
- Cytogenetics
- Molecular Genetics
If you do not wish to be considered for a particular area, please include a brief statement of reasoning.
- Please include a list of courses, clinical rotations and laboratory experiences that will be completed by the proposed start date. These can be included as an addendum to your essay document (only 1 document can be uploaded) or sent separately if they are in a different format.
Recommendations (use online recommendation form) – Please provide a minimum of two recommendations.
Please include your program director as one of your references.
Step 2: Submit the following materials:
- An official transcript of all college and/or university credits
- List of courses, clinical rotations and laboratory experiences that will be completed by the proposed start date of the internship (may be submitted as an addendum to your essay document)
Please send the required materials that are NOT completed online, plus any transcripts not sent electronically to MSHS, in one envelope to:

Step 3: The selection committee carefully reviews each application. Students accepted to the Genetic Counseling Internship Program will be notified in writing.
