The Mayo School of Health Sciences Endoscopy Technician closely follows the curriculum from the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates’ Gastroenterology Nursing: A Core Curriculum.
Training topics include the responsibilities of the endoscopy technician in the following areas:
- Basic room set-up
- Role of the GI technician
- Infection control
- Basic patient care and safety
- Basic anatomy and physiology
- Procedures done in the Endoscopy Department
- Equipment maintenance and sterilization
- Technical (assisting the physician and nurse during the procedure)
- Scope processing
- Complex procedures (foreign bodies, decompression, GI bleeds)
- Polypectomy, biopsy, electrocautery, duodenal aspirates and dilation
- Anatomy and pathophysiology of the GI tract
Your training will include approximately 80 hours classroom time and more than 200 clinical hours in the clinical/hospital setting.
You will work closely with gastroenterologists, anesthesiologists, endoscopy nurses and other endoscopy team members to provide individualized care to patients undergoing endoscopies.

Our system of evaluation provides students and faculty with a comprehensive look at individual performance, allowing students who are experiencing academic difficulty to be directed to appropriate support resources, including tutoring programs and counseling opportunities.
