Program Description
Mayo School of Health Sciences (MSHS) offers an 11-month Dietetic Internship Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., providing comprehensive clinical knowledge and skills that enable practitioners to provide complete nutrition services.

This program's mission is to provide a quality training program which prepares graduates to enter the field as competent entry level professionals with an emphasis in medical nutrition therapy. The MSHS Dietetic Internship Program selected the medical nutrition therapy emphasis due to the high acuity level and complexity of care required by our patient population. Interns will be prepared to enter the profession as entry-level practitioners.

Program Goals:

  1. The program will prepare competent entry-level practitioners.

  2. Outcome Measures

    • Over a five-year period, the pass rate for DI graduates taking the registration examination for the first-time will be at least 80 percent.
    • Eighty percent of employers indicate graduates had satisfactory to above satisfactory entry-level competencies (average rating on survey is “3” on a scale of 1 to 5 with “5” being excellent).
    • Eighty percent of graduates indicate they had satisfactory to above satisfactory entry-level competencies for their first professional position (average rating on survey is “3” on a scale of 1 to 5 with “5” being excellent).
  3. The program will provide dietetic professionals to meet the needs of the Midwest and beyond.

  4. Outcome Measures

    • Eighty-five percent of interns complete all program requirements within 150 percent of the time planned for completion.
    • Over a five-year period, 70 percent of more of DI graduates who sought employment in dietetics will be employed within three months of program completion.
  5. The program will encourage students to recognize the need to continue their education and participate in the American Dietetic Association and other professional organizations.

  6. Outcome Measures

    • Each intern will attend a minimum of three local dietetic association meetings/CE opportunities each year.
    • Over a five year period, 80 percent of graduates will continue their education and/or be involved in one or more professional organizations.

The Dietetic Internship is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of The American Dietetic Association.

Facilities
The Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minn., comprises an extensive outpatient complex, Saint Marys Hospital and Rochester Methodist Hospital, and substantial research and education facilities.

This Mayo site is among the largest, most advanced medical centers in the world.

Primarily, education for this internship is conducted at Saint Marys Hospital, a 1,157-bed facility that was founded in 1889. Within Saint Marys is the 85-bed Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital. Interns also have rotations at Mayo Clinic and Rochester Methodist Hospital.

Graduation and Certification
Upon successful completion of the 1536 supervised practice hours, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from Mayo School of Health Sciences and a Verification Statement that allows you to take the professional registration exam given by the American Dietetic Association.

Hours
For the majority of the internship, your learning schedule will include eight-hour days, five days per week. While the regular workweek is usually 40 hours, additional projects and homework will be assigned.

The program is a full-time commitment for class and clinical work. Interns will work primarily weekdays however, may be required to work three to four weekends throughout the year as established for learning experiences. Hours vary depending on the work experience.

No credit is given for previous work experience.

Each year, Mayo School of Health Sciences admits eight students to its Dietetic Internship Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. This ensures you will receive close one-on-one instruction and a comprehensive educational experience.
