Program Description
Students enrolled in the GateWay
Community College Hospital Central Service Technician Program
may complete their rotation at Mayo Clinic during the final phase
of their education.
The Central Service Program takes place only during Spring Semester at Gateway Community College.
Mayo School of Health Sciences (MSHS) coordinates this training
experience in conjunction with GateWay. The length of the rotation
is flexible and depends upon the GateWay program guidelines and
requirements.

Facilities
Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix is part of Mayo Clinic Arizona, which also includes Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. Thousands of surgeries are performed each year at Mayo Clinic Hospital, ranging from straightforward and routine to emergent and highly complex. Surgical procedures include general, neurologic, gynecologic, cardiac, orthopedic, trauma/critical care and urologic, in addition to organ transplants. Central Services provides essential support to the Department of Surgery, helping to ensure the highest-quality patient care. The vast number and type of surgeries, in combination with our highly educated faculty, make Mayo Clinic an ideal educational setting for you to receive your central service training.
Mayo Clinic Arizona opened in 1987 as a premier academic medical center in the southwestern United States, where advanced programs in medical research and education support the highest-quality patient care.
The Scottsdale campus is centered around a beautiful five-story outpatient clinic. This modern facility contains an eye and dermatology center, full-service laboratory, pharmacy, patient education library, an endoscopy suite and a 188-seat auditorium for patient, staff and student education programs. Services in more than 66 medical and surgical disciplines are provided, including programs in cancer treatment and organ transplantation.
The Scottsdale campus offers excellent education facilities, including classrooms, lecture halls, an extensive library and computer lab. The Samuel C. Johnson Research Center, a 75,000-square-foot building, houses scientists, trainees and students focused on molecular genetics, molecular immunology, molecular and cell biology, molecular chemistry and surgical research.
On the Phoenix campus, the state-of-the-art 205-bed Mayo Clinic Hospital, which opened in 1998, is the first hospital entirely designed and built by Mayo. It has been recognized as "the Best Hospital in Phoenix" several times by Phoenix magazine.
Graduation and Certification
Upon successful completion of your Hospital Central Service Technician
Program, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from Mayo
Clinic College of Medicine, School of Health Sciences. After completing
your central service rotations, you will receive a certificate from
Gateway Community College.
Upon completion of the program and 400 hours of hands-on experience,
you are eligible to take the International
Association of Healthcare Central Services Material Management (IAHCSMM)
Certified Central Service Technician Examination.
Hours
For the majority of the rotation, your learning schedule will include
eight-hour days, two to five days per week.
Class Size
Each year, Mayo School of Health Sciences accepts
three to five
students
from GateWay for their Central Service rotations at Mayo Clinic
Hospital. This ensures you will receive close one-on-one instruction
and a comprehensive educational experience.
