Program Description
The Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Internship Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester is an 11-week intensive program during the summer. It begins the first week of June, and continues into the middle of August.

Interns in clinical pastoral education are most often seminarians or graduate-level theology students who have completed at least one or two years of theological education.

The Clinical Pastoral Education programs at Mayo Clinic in Rochester are accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Commission on Certification and Accreditation (USCCB).

These accrediting agencies have authorized the Mayo Clinic’s hospitals in Rochester, (i.e., Rochester Methodist Hospital and Saint Marys Hospital) to carry on training programs under their auspices. The programs undergo annual evaluations and an intensive reaccreditation process regularly.

Mayo Clinic’s Clinical Pastoral Education Program is accredited to offer Level I and Level II ACPE training.

Mayo Clinic is also accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission.

Facilities
Students in Mayo School of Health Sciences’ Clinical Pastoral Education programs learn and practice at Rochester Methodist Hospital and Saint Marys Hospital, both part of the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester.

Graduation and Certification
When you successfully complete the Clinical Pastoral Education Internship Program, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, School of Health Sciences.

Those students who complete the internship are eligible to apply for accredited clinical pastoral education residencies, including the Mayo Clinic program.

Hours
For the majority of the classroom instruction, your learning schedule will include eight-hour days, five days per week.

Interns work with Mayo Chaplain Services’ staff to provide on-call ministry for the inpatient and outpatient services of Mayo Clinic. You will participate in all service shifts, including days, evenings, nights and weekend on-call coverage. Worship and preaching opportunities are part of the weekend schedule.

Class Size
Each year, Mayo School of Health Sciences admits six students to its Clinical Pastoral Education Internship Program. Therefore, class sizes and clinical groups are small and one-on-one instruction is provided.
