The Clinical Pastoral Education Internship Program offers you the opportunity to gain experience ministering in a hospital setting, and to increase awareness of how personal issues may influence performance in ministry.

Clinical
Significant time is devoted to pastoral assessment and the formation of a professional identity as a pastor in a clinical setting. Internship program components include:

  • Daily small-group participation and learning
  • Weekly individual supervision
  • Daily opportunities for pastoral ministry on patient units
  • On-call clinical experiences
  • Daily opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration
  • Teaching, preaching and faith community leadership experiences

Didactic
Clinical presentations, seminars and small group discussions are integral parts of the Clinical Pastoral Education Internship. Lectures and seminars are given by staff chaplains and supervising chaplains, as well as interdisciplinary guest faculty. One or two didactic seminars are given each week.

Curriculum topics are determined by student interest and need. Past topics have included:

  • Ethical reflection
  • Advanced directives
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Hope and the future
  • Pediatric ministry
  • Gerontology
  • Evaluating couples for pastoral counseling
  • Models of Pastoral Assessment

Grading or Evaluation
Mayo School of Health Sciences uses student evaluative tools that include:

  • Clinical reflections
  • Demonstration of skills
  • Self-assessment exercises
  • Faculty feedback

Evaluation of the ministry experience occurs during group sessions. Each week interns summarize their learning in writing and review their observations with their supervisor. At mid-quarter and final evaluations, students and supervisors conduct written appraisals. Ample opportunity is given for interns to evaluate progress on their learning goals.

Our system of evaluation provides students and faculty with a comprehensive look at individual performance, allowing students who are experiencing academic difficulty to be directed to appropriate support resources, including tutoring programs and counseling opportunities.

Curriculum Enhancements
Mayo School of Health Sciences is committed to developing and maintaining the very best education programs. Changes may be made to the curriculum and other aspects of this program as necessary to assure the highest-quality training.
