Program Description
Students enrolled in the Respiratory Care track of the Bachelors of Science in Health Professions (BSHP) at our affiliate education institution, University of Minnesota Rochester, complete their final two years of training at Mayo Clinic

Three primary factors make Mayo Clinic an ideal educational setting for you to receive your respiratory care training:

The Respiratory Care Program:

  • Prepares students to become respiratory care practitioners with advanced-level clinical skills.
  • Provides professional courses and clinical experiences to support professional development.
  • Prepares students to serve as consultants to physicians and other medical staff.
  • Provides a student with a background in liberal arts.
  • Offers students options for specialized clinical study, including:

    - Adult critical care and patient transport

    - Newborn and pediatric critical care

    - Cardiopulmonary diagnostics-pulmonary function testing

    - Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, disease prevention, case management in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), as well as smoking cessation and lung health counseling

Facilities
The Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minn., comprises an extensive outpatient complex, Saint Marys Hospital and Rochester Methodist Hospital and substantial research and education facilities.
This Mayo site is among the largest, most advanced medical centers in the world.

Primarily, clinical education is conducted at Saint Marys Hospital, a 1,157-bed facility that was founded in 1889. Within Saint Marys Hospital is the 85-bed Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital. Students also have rotations within the Mayo Clinic Health System.

Graduation and Certification
Students participate in an extensive exam review before the end of the junior and senior year. After successful completion of the senior-year course work, students are eligible to complete the NBRC board examinations to attain the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential.

When you successfully complete the Respiratory Care Program, you will receive a BSHP from the University of Minnesota and a certificate of completion from Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Mayo School of Health Sciences.

Hours
For the majority of the internship, a student's learning schedule will include eight-hour and twelve- hour days, five days per week.

Class Size
Each year, Mayo School of Health Sciences and the University of Minnesota admits up to 15 students to the Respiratory Care Program. This ensures you will receive close one-on-one instruction and a comprehensive educational experience.
