Prerequisites

To be accepted into the Recreational Therapy Internship in Phoenix, you must:

  • Be in your final year in a recreation management and tourism program with an emphasis in therapeutic recreation and have completed all classroom academic course work before applying
  • Have completed basic CPR training and certification
  • Have completed recommended courses in anatomy, physiology and medical terminology
  • Have a primary interest in rehabilitation in a clinical setting

Technical standards

Mayo School of Health Sciences accepts students who are highly qualified for its programs. To be considered for admittance, you should exhibit strong qualifications for the health profession you wish to pursue. Applicants to programs must possess these general qualities:

  • Critical thinking skills
  • Sound judgment
  • Emotional stability and maturity
  • Empathy for others
  • Physical and mental stamina
  • Ability to learn and function in a variety of settings

In addition to these general standards, recreational therapists should be comfortable working with people who are ill or have disabilities. Therapists must be patient, tactful and persuasive when working with people who have a variety of special needs. Ingenuity, a sense of humor and imagination are needed to adapt activities to individual needs. Good physical coordination is necessary to demonstrate or participate in recreational activities.

You must be able to perform the essential functions of the profession and meet the standards of the curriculum. Students seeking exceptions to these standards or reasonable accommodations should initiate their request with the program's director.
