Positron Emission Tomography Certification Exam Preparatory Course

Course description

Mayo School of Health Sciences at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., offers a four-month online didactic course in positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT).

PET/CT is a specialty modality of nuclear medicine that is used for diagnosis, staging, restaging and evaluation of treatment response in patients with malignant disease and metastasis. It is also used for cardiovascular and neurologic evaluation.

The Positron Emission Tomography Certification Exam Preparatory Course allows the learner to uncover the fundamentals of PET/CT imaging using self-directed, participant-paced learning activities. Through this type of learning, new technologists as well as veteran technologists can utilize this course as a review for the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) PET specialty certification examination or to enhance their comprehension of everyday PET/CT applications.

The course includes case studies in the areas of radiopharmacy, instrumentation and diagnostic procedures. Following completion of the case studies, participants can formally assess their knowledge with a mock board examination.

Upon completing this online course, you should feel comfortable with concepts of PET/CT diagnostic procedures, PET and CT instrumentation, radiopharmacy, and radiation protection as they are applied in PET/CT imaging suites at most facilities (see the curriculum). In addition, the CT component of this course includes CT as it is used and applied in PET imaging. Diagnostic CT procedures are not covered in this course.

This course only includes didactic resources and content for PET/CT and will not fulfill the 700 clinical hours required by the NMTCB for the PET specialty certification examination.

Hours and time limit

This course is delivered completely online with no on-campus time required. It is designed to be self-directed and self-paced so you can move through it at a comfortable pace. This pace is different for all learners, but the course should not take longer than four months to complete.

Note: The course remains available to you for four months from the course start date. After four months, the course is no longer accessible to you.

Accreditation

See accreditation information for Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

Graduation and certification

Upon successful completion of the Positron Emission Tomography Certification Exam Preparatory Course, you receive a certificate of completion from Mayo School of Health Sciences.

Class size

Each month, a new cohort starts the course. Since this course is not instructor-led, there is not a maximum class size. Each cohort has the ability to converse with their peers through discussion boards if desired, but discussion is not required.
